Reflashing Your DI-720 or DI-730 Instrument

To download a printer-friendly pdf of these instructions, click here.

This process only applies to Ethernet instruments shipped before November 2001 and to all USB instruments.
(To see if you have an Ethernet instrument this process would apply to, consult the silver label located on the bottom of your device.  If the model number’s extension says -EN-A, it does not require any firmware upgrade.  If it says -EN, it does.)

1
) Disassemble your DI-720 or DI-730 instrument. To do this, remove screws (6) and jack posts (2) from the back of the instrument. Slide the top cover off (Fig. 1).

2) Locate the three-pinned header near the back of the instrument (Fig. 2).

3)  Change the jumper from protected to unprotected (Fig. 3).  (In Fig. 2, the jumper is shown in a protected state.)

4)  Connect your instrument to the printer port and make sure the power is turned on.  (You need a PC with a PS/2 or bidirectional printer port to do this.)

5)  Download the appropriate FlashRom Upgrade Program.
For USB instruments, download www.dataq.com/misc/bnm/flash.zip
For Ethernet instruments, download www.dataq.com/misc/bnm/flashe.zip.

6) Unzip the files under a temporary directory like  C:\test.

7) If you are using a Win3.1/95/98 PC to upgrade the firmware:

A) Go to MS-DOS prompt

B) Go to the directory C:\TEST (or replace “test” with the name you gave your temporary directory) and run: FLASH <lpt> (for USB option) or FLASHE <lpt> (for Ethernet option), where <lpt> is the printer port number.  For example, typing "FLASH 1" activates the flash program through printer port 1.

If you are using a WinXP/NT/ME/2000 PC to upgrade the firmware, an option only available for the USB option:

A) Install WinDaq/parallel port software and confirm the DI-720 works fine under parallel port mode

B) Go to MS-DOS prompt

C) Go to the directory C:\TEST (or replace “test” with the name you gave your temporary directory) and run: FLASHNT <lpt>, where <lpt> is the printer port number.  For example, typing "FLASHNT 1" activates the flash program through printer port 1.

When you are done updating the firmware, you may need to upgrade to the latest WinDaq/USB software.

8) To continue reflashing, follow the prompts on the screen (“Press any key to continue” and then verify that you want the old firmware to be overwritten.)

9) After you see the "Write done!" notice, remove the printer cable and turn off the power to your instrument.

10) Move the jumper on the three-pinned header back to its protected state.  (Refer to figure 2.)

11) Reassemble your instrument, being careful not to over-tighten the screws or jackposts, as breakage and stripping is possible.

12) Connect the USB or Ethernet cable and turn on the power.
Your instrument has been reflashed and is ready to go!
