NEW PORTABLE DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM FEATURES INDUSTRY'S WIDEST MEASUREMENT RANGE WITH 1000 VOLT CHANNEL-TO-CHANNEL ISOLATION
AKRON, OH, June 8, 1998 — DATAQ Instruments announces today the availability of the Models DI-720 and DI-730 Data Acquisition Systems, two super compact (L 9" × W 7.29" × H 1.52") portable data acquisition systems that communicate with the PC's printer port in EPP, Bi-directional or Standard mode, making for easy installation. The DI-730 features the industry's first-of-its-kind measurement range of ±10mV to ±800VDC (or peak AC) across six ranges per channel with ±1000V channel-to-channel isolation. With a dynamic range unmatched by any other product, the DI-730 offers eight differential channels at sampling speeds of 250 kHz at 16-bit resolution.
Supports USB and Ethernet
For users increasingly interested in performing remote data acquisition or Internet-based monitoring/control, the DI-720/DI-730 provides an Ethernet 10BaseT communication port option. The Ethernet communication port allows connection to any local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) that supports the TCP/IP protocol for Windows. The Ethernet interface allows multiple 700 Series devices to be connected to the same network or node at the same time from virtually any location desired. In addition, both units can be connected via the USB port, offering simple plug-and-play connections to a PC or laptop with hot-swap capability.
Complete Solution with Easy Installation
Both the DI-720 and DI-730 are designed for PC users who need a flexible data acquisition solution and come complete with both acquisition and playback software. The system's standard port design eliminates the need to open computers or worry about base address, interrupt or DMA configurations, allowing for fast, easy installation. These systems are well suited as a direct replacement for most PC plug-in data acquisition cards.
The DI-730 can be used in virtually any industrial environment because of its wide dynamic range and high isolation that protects both the board and PC from high common mode voltages without disturbing sensitive control circuits. This enables the DI-730 to provide a highly cost-effective solution because it replaces multibox systems consisting of isolation amps, high and low voltage amps, and a separate data acquisition subsystem.
The ability to provide this level of functionality in a single instrument is due to DATAQ's novel blend of old and new technology. Old technology is incorporated in the form of gas discharge tubes, which are applied directly across the input of each channel to protect them from extreme over-voltage situations. Input signals are connected simultaneously to 100:1 and 1:1 circuits; a multiplexer and programmable gain amplifier work in tandem to provide both coarse and fine range selection. Voltages passing through the 100:1 attenuator are reduced to safe levels and therefore pose no danger. However, signals passing through the 1:1 attenuator would of course destroy the remainder of the circuit at high voltage levels. Protection is provided via two back-to-back depletion mode MOSFETs that pinch off any voltages exceeding ±15VDC, well inside the tolerance of the instrument's circuitry.
The DI-720 is ideal for anyone who needs the convenience, flexibility and simplicity of a standard port data acquisition device with no loss in performance to plug-in boards. The unit offers up to 32 single-ended or 16 differential analog input channels, programmable per channel to optimize channel use, at sampling speeds up to 250 kHz at 16-bit resolution. Each of the DI-720's channels can measure from ± 1.25 to ± 10V across four programmable gain selections (1, 2, 4, 8) providing a wide range of signals to be measured simultaneously. The DI-720 at $37 per channel, provides the lowest cost per channel of any general purpose standard port data acquisition device. Because of its high channel density, the DI-720 provides exceptional value and eliminates costly channel expanders in most applications.
Key System Features
Both the DI-720 and DI-730 offer the following features:
- DSP-based design — Provides enhanced performance at a lower cost. Can be customized for specific applications.
- Support of average, maximum, minimum and last point acquisition methods — Allows noise reduction, or min/max detection in real time using DATAQ's exclusive intelligent oversampling technique. Allows the acquisition of peak voltage and/or current at extremely low sample rates.
- Built-in pre and post triggering — Allows acquisition of data points before, after, and at the trigger event. No need to collect unwanted data.
- Programmable sample rates — Supports programmable sample rate per channel for conserving disk storage space where high and low frequency signals are measured at the same time.
- Potless digital calibration — Calibration is achieved via software.
- Operates from any power supply source between nine and 36 volts — Allows operation from the included AC power supply.
The DI-720 is well suited for:

The DI-730 is designed for a wide range of industries or equipment where high and millivolt level voltages as well as high in-rush currents are measured either separately or simultaneously, such as:
- Steel mills, aluminum rolling mills, paper mills, heavy duty construction equipment, heavy duty cranes, open-pit mining, electric locomotives, high-speed transit cars, DC drive systems, HV lighting tests and quality control, and others.
Turnkey support for the DI-720 and DI-730 is provided by DATAQ's WinDaq/Pro, WinDaq/Pro+, or WinDaq/Lite. Each system comes with WinDaq/Lite acquisition and WinDaq Waveform Browser playback and analysis software for fast, simple-set-up data acquisition, playback, and analysis without programming. Virtually any software environment is supported, including Excel, HP VEE, LabVIEW® and TestPoint. Language support is provided by the supplied Programmer's Software Development Kit for Windows-based programming languages including Visual Basic, C, and C++.
