AKRON, OHIO, March 18, 1996 — DATAQ Instruments introduces the DI-500 Series, a line of data acquisition instruments designed to simplify industrial measurements where signal conditioning is typically required. For the first time, a data acquisition system is available that incorporates the A/D converter, signal conditioning and I/O connectors in a single unit, thus eliminating cabling and integration problems associated with multiple boxes. Both the desktop and portable units can take users from sensor outputs to final results in one simple system with single-source availability.

The new DI-500 has the following features:

There are DI-500 models for either signal conditioned inputs, high-level inputs, or a combination of both. For signal conditioned inputs, the DI-500 Series uses a specially designed 5B backplane built directly into the unit. This allows the products to accept up to 32 industry-standard, plug-in 5B modules that interface to any industrial sensor. DATAQ offers 60 different types of 5B module, all with built-in 1000V input-to-output isolation.

DI-500 Series products are offered in two basic configurations: A portable unit in a carrying case with latchable lid, or a desktop unit with optional 19-inch rack mounting ears. They are powered from either an included AC adapter or external 9 to 30VDC source. Both products connect to a PC's parallel (printer) port and allow sample rates up to 250,000 samples per second with a PC's EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port) configuration. Sample rates of 80,000 and 40,000 samples per second are supported in bi-directional and standard printer port configurations respectively.

The DI-500 Series 5B modules provide 1000 volts of input-to-output isolation, which allows safe and accurate measurements in the presence of a common mode voltage (CMV). This frequently-encountered phenomenon in industrial instrumentation occurs when making measurements across current shunts, or when potential differences exist between the grounds at the instrument and the point of the measurement. Without isolation, a CMV can destroy an instrument's accuracy, and a sufficiently large CMV will actually destroy the instrument itself. The isolation barrier provided by 5B modules allows the front end of DI-500 Series products to float at the level of the CMV (up to 1000V) for added accuracy and safety.

Users of the DI-500 line will enjoy several levels of software support. Programmers can put the products to work by tapping the included software development kit for both Windows and DOS programming languages. Available by request and free of charge are drivers for Capital Equipment's TestPoint and National Instruments' LabVIEW software packages. Non-programmers can choose DATAQ Instruments own WinDaq software. This ready-to-run package allows users to acquire, display, record, playback, and analyze data without writing a single line of code.
